There is tremendous anger among conservatives. Much of it is directed at Obama…but there is an increasing frustration with McCain for his failure to focus that anger into the battle against Obama.

At present, McCain is not leading his troops. It seems as though he doesn’t see what many conservatives see–that Obama is indeed a dangerous man!

If anything, McCain’s efforts to tamp down the anger are having the opposite effect–they are fanning the flames and increasing the risk that the anger and fear will build into a hysterical rage.

McCain needs to remember what Churchill said about being the voice of his people’s passion…”The nation had the lion’s heart. I had the luck to give the roar.”

Here’s an excerpt from AP which captures perfectly McCain’s failure to adequately assess the danger that conservatives instinctively and viscerally recognize in Obama…

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The anger is getting raw at Republican rallies and John McCain is acting to tamp it down. McCain was booed by his own supporters Friday when, in an abrupt switch from raising questions about Barack Obama’s character, he described the Democrat as a “decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States.”

If McCain thinks Obama is a “decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States” then he just doesn’t get it.

McCain cannot lead in this battle if he doesn’t see what’s at stake.
