As previously reported here, Russia (Medvedev at the direction of Putin) decided to forgo the typical but apparently too sentimental extension of victory congratulations to President-elect Obama.  Instead, Medvedev gave him a nice backhand across the face by announcing the deployment of short-range missiles to Kaliningrad in response to the planned U.S. deployment of a missile shield in Poland.

Yevgeny Volk, head of the Moscow office of the US Heritage Foundation, a research centre, said…

The announcement of missile deployments…is meant to test Obama– (to find out) whether he really is a strong and efficient leader

The Nerve! Doesn’t Pootie Poot know that Obama has 300 foreign affairs advisors. Surely someone in that crowd of 300 can help Obama show a little backbone.

And what was Obama’s response?

He immediately adopted a conciliatory tone toward Russia…releasing a statement that

“President-elect Obama made no commitment on it (the missile shield in Poland)…”

Of course, this statement was a denial of Polish President Kaczynski’s claim Saturday that Obama told him “the missile defense project would continue.”

A two-fer! Kowtow to an aggressive enemy and embarrass a loyal ally with one simple statement.

However much our country is at risk, it is going to be fun to see Russia poke and prod at “The One” in search of his elusive and possibly nonexistent spine.
