Al-Qaeda and the Black Death–hints of bioterrorism? (Robert Maginnis)

The Sun UK reported this week that 40 terrorists (al-Qaeda) were killed by the Black Death in Algeria and it might have been spread to other cells outside Algeria.

The al-Qaeda epidemic began in the cave hideouts of AQLIM in Tizi Ouzou province, 150km east of the capital Algiers. The group, led by wanted terror boss Abdelmalek Droudkal, was forced to turn its shelters in the Yakouren forest into mass graves and flee.

Robert Maginnis (in Human Events today) raises the most important point about this incident and that is (excerpt)…

…whether the North African fanatics fell victim to the naturally-occurring pathogen or (whether) the group mistakenly released the killer bug while brewing it for terror attacks.

Read the entire Maginnis article (very interesting).

Let’s hope bioterrorism isn’t Obama’s first test. It could be devastating!

Geert Wilders to be prosecuted for “Fitna”

A Dutch court yesterday overruled a prior court decision and argued that Geert Wilders should be prosecuted for “inciting hatred and discrimination” and also “for insulting Muslim worshipers because of comparisons between Islam and Nazism” in his film Fitna (click here to see the video posting of Fitna).

Excerpt from the WSJ Online today (emphasis added)…

There are of course limits to free speech, such as calls for violence. But one doesn’t need to agree with Mr. Wilders to acknowledge that he hasn’t crossed that line. Some Muslims say they are outraged by his statements. But if freedom of speech means anything, it means the freedom of controversial speech. Consensus views need no protection.

This is exactly what Dutch prosecutors said (previously) in June when they rejected the complaints against Mr. Wilders. “That comments are hurtful and offensive for a large number of Muslims does not mean that they are punishable,” the prosecutors said in a statement. “Freedom of expression fulfills an essential role in public debate in a democratic society. That means that offensive comments can be made in a political debate.”

We will follow this new development closely. Good luck, Geert!

Jackie Mason speaks his mind and I admire him greatly for that. He also always makes me oddly homesick for my favorite deli, Fine and Shapiro on West 72nd St.

Here’s Jackie’s rant about the Inauguration, oy vey!

NASA to announce proof of life on Mars? (Fox News)

NASA is expected to announce Thursday that they have proof of life on Mars.  The proof in this case is the discovery of large methane clouds in the atmosphere that could only have been emitted by living organisms (most likely of the subterranean microbial variety).  As an aside, the methane might have otherwise been produced by volcanic activity, but there are no known volcanoes on Mars.

You can catch the announcement at 7 pm EST on NASA TV.

Spirituality makes children happier–and healthier (Washington Times)

From an article by Jennifer Harper in today’s Washington Times (excerpt)…

The spiritual lives of children has [sic] come under close scrutiny by two different sets of researchers who reached the same conclusion. Spirituality is a good thing for youngsters, a positive influence.

It makes them happier – and healthier.

“Children who were more spiritual were happier,” said a University of British Columbia study released Friday, which methodically quantified the typical ups and downs in a young life.

“UAW’s ‘legacy’ at GM” (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review)

Here’s a clear picture of how the UAW is choking GM to death (by Ralph Reiland in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review–excerpt/emphasis added)…

General Motors lost $10.6 billion in 2006. GM lost another $38.7 billion in 2007, the largest annual loss in automotive history. Through the third quarter of 2008, GM lost another $21.2 billion.

On Sept. 24, 2007, a year during which GM lost an average of $3.2 billion per month, the United Auto Workers launched a national strike against the company, ordering the shutdown of 80 GM plants in the United States. More than 73,000 UAW-represented factory workers walked off the job and hit the picket lines.

The UAW said that GM had failed to address job security issues during negotiations.
