Tom Daschle has withdrawn his nomination for health and human services secretary, after fielding mounting criticism over his failure to pay more than $130,000 in taxes.

President Obama stood by Daschle Monday, telling reporters that he “absolutely” supports the former South Dakota senator. But the president accepted Daschle’s withdrawal with “sadness and regret” Tuesday morning, according to a White House statement.

It was just reported that Judd Gregg has been nominated for Commerce provided Gov John Lynch will select a Republican to replace him in the Senate.

Gregg brokered a deal with the New Hampshire governor that he would be replaced by a Republican in order to not shift the balance of power in the Senate. Gov. John Lynch is expected to name Bonnie Newman, Gregg’s former chief of staff, as an interim caretaker in the role.

In a White House event introducing him as his Commerce nominee, Obama said Gregg, 61, is “famous or infamous, depending on your perspective, on Capitol Hill, for his strict fiscal discipline.”
