Netanyahu to form Israeli government (JPost)

Bibi hopes to form a broad coalition, but Livni says “no way.” From today’s JPost (excerpt)…

After the failure of his last-ditch effort to muster Kadima leader Tzipi Livni’s support for a unity government on Friday, President Shimon Peres formally entrusted Likud chairman Binyamin Netanyahu with the task of building a coalition.

Netanyahu arrived as Beit Hanassi on Friday afternoon and received the president’s official letter of appointment.

Earlier, after emerging from a meeting with Peres, Livni announced that she had no intention of joining a broad coalition under Netanyahu, despite the Likud chairman’s assertion that he was willing to “go to great lengths” in order to induce Kadima to join his government.

Hamas: “Demons of Gaza” (Ralph Peters)

Ralph Peters does an excellent job in today’s NYPost of reminding us all that Hamas has one basic goal–the destruction of Israel! Some (Daniel Pipes, for example) have suggested that the solution might be for Egypt to oversee Gaza and Jordon to oversee the West Bank. But whatever happens, Israel will never know peace as long as Hamas runs free in Gaza.

Here’s an excerpt from the Ralph Peters article (see link above to Daniel Pipes’ article)…

…our civilization faces terrorists who regard death as a promotion. They believe that any action can be excused because they’re serving their god. And their core belief is that you and I, as stubborn unbelievers, deserve death.

3 Rockets fired from Lebanon into Northern Israel Thursday (1/8)

Let’s hope this is just an isolated incident!

The IDF’s Northern Command held consultations following the attack, saying that “Israel holds the government of Lebanon and the Lebanese armed forces responsible for preventing rocket fire into Israel.” The army also said that Palestinian elements were interested in “dragging Lebanon into a war.” (Source: JPost.com)

Hamas rocket lands in Ashdod kindergarten schoolyard Monday

This is why no cease fire will work until Hamas is eliminated from Gaza (excerpts from Arutz Sheva)…

A long-range Grad-type Katyusha rocket landed in the schoolyard of a kindergarten in a northern Ashdod neighborhood at approximately 3:20 Monday afternoon — but miraculously, only two people were lightly wounded, one by flying shrapnel. Thirty children are normally in the classroom during the day, when the missile struck, but due to Home Front Command instructions, the building was empty at the time.

Magen David Adom medics who raced to the scene said they treated a number of people who suffered from severe emotional trauma. Eyewitnesses described the explosion as “unusually loud.”

[...]

Hamas and allied terrorist attacked southern Israel with close to 30 rockets since 7:00 a.m. Monday, appearing to focus primarily on the coastal cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod.

The Israeli-Hamas conflict: Obama’s first test of mettle

Five months ago, when he was visited Sderot, Obama didn’t mince worlds…

If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I would do everything to stop that, and would expect Israel to do the same thing.

However, since the recent commencement of Israel’s counter attack on Hamas, Obama has deferred to President Bush. Soon (I presume) we will see if he stands with Israel in her defense of herself…or if he will join the chorus of those who always blame Israel.

Obama’s Naive Offer to Israel of a ‘Nuclear Umbrella’ Against Iran

This idea is an embarrassing nonstarter for the Obama camp because it fails to address the use of proxies by Iran. But, reading between the lines, it appears the crux of this story is Obama’s reversal of his stand that Iran’s pursuit of nukes is “unacceptable.” To quote Sarkozy (said to Israel back in October, but still applicable today)…”Obama’s stand on Iran is “utterly immature…”

Here is an excerpt and link to the story at Fox News

President-elect Barack Obama will offer Israel a strategic pact designed to fend off any nuclear attack on the Jewish state by Iran, an Israeli newspaper reported on Thursday.

Haaretz, quoting an unnamed source, said the Obama administration would pledge under the proposed “nuclear umbrella” to respond to any Iranian strike on Israel with a “devastating U.S. nuclear response.”

Granting Israel a nuclear guarantee would essentially suggest the U.S. is willing to come to terms with a nuclear Iran, the paper reported.
